Rudyard junior Bradley Hall and Newberry senior Lance Bowler were named the Straits Area Conference Wresters of the Year in recent voting by league coaches.


Hall received the conference’s ’lower weights’ MVP recognition for a second consecutive year. Competing in the 103-pound division, Hall finished 38-3 this past season and was a fourth-place finisher at the MHSAA Finals at Ford Field. Hall was a district and regional champion, and runner-up at the UP Championships. He also won the Most Valuable Wrestler Award in the lower weights at the Bill Barrett Memorial in Rogers City Hall earned all-state honors from Michigan Grappler, making the All-Junior Team in Division 4.


Bowler is the SAC ‘upper weights’ Wrestler of the Year. A 189-pounder, Bowler was an individual district champion and helped the Indians win a district title. Bowler won the 189-pound class at the Northern Michigan Championships in Gaylord, and he was a UP Championship runner-up, and a State Finals qualifier.


Rudyard has four SAC First Team honorees, including Hall (103 pounds), Deven Ellison (125), Austin Davis (135) and Marlon Staten (285), while Bulldogs’ Ryan Hinton (119) and Gabe Latour-Torres (189) received second team honors.


Newberry’s Travis O’Neill (119), Noah Gielecki (130), Jacob Gribbell (160), Cameron Depew (171) and Bowler (189) were SAC First Team selections, while Paul Davis (171) made the second team.


Sault High junior Nathan Heyrman was named to the SAC First Team, while Blue Devil teammates Adam Craven (130), Matthew Mundy (140) and Devin Ferrish (215) were second team honorees.


St. Ignace landed three wrestlers on the All-SAC First Team, including Matthew Valetta (112), Hunter Brown (145) and Caleb Brown (215). The Saints’ Jonathan Litzner (125) and Summer Amacher (160) were named to the second team.


SAC wrestling teams include Sault High, Rudyard, Newberry, St. Ignace, Cheboygan and Pellston. Rudyard has a co-op with Brimley, while Newberry co-ops with Engadine.
