I am excited to welcome the Isabella energy wind project to Michigan. I was sad to learn that the developers of the project will be using workers from other states.

Many of us don’t understand why a company that stands to profit from large construction projects like the wind farm wouldn’t hire Michigan workers. Last I checked, Michigan workers are as skilled and capable as any in the nation. Our construction workers have the certification and training for big projects.

I can’t think of any reason to not use workers from Michigan, other than cheaper workers mean construction companies pay less and rake in bigger profits. As a former business manager for Operating Engineers Local 324 from here in Michigan, I know firsthand their safety and training is second to none, and not using them to build is a mistake. That’s a bad deal for Michigan and for Isabella County.
