Three Rivers American Legion Hice-Shutes Post #170 observed Memorial Day with a ceremony at Riverside Cemetery.
Attendees wore masks and stood a safe distance apart from each other during the brief event.
“God of our understanding, as our nation pauses today to remember those in the military who have given their lives for the freedoms we enjoy, we pray you would have us all look to you for strength, comfort and guidance,” senior vice commander Norm Stutesman said in his opening prayer. “Be with all who serve in our Armed Forces. Bless them and their families.”
Accompanied by Geoffrey Clark on the bagpipes, Stutesman read the names of nearly 55 local veterans who passed away this last year.
The Legion Honor Guard offered a three-round volley, and everyone stood solemnly as the playing of Taps rounded out the ceremony.
“God of our understanding, lift the hearts of those for whom this holiday is not just diversion, but painful memory and continual deprivation,” Stutesman said in his closing prayer. “Bless those whose dear ones have died. We remember with compassion and heartfelt thanks those who have died serving their country.”
