PORTLAND — There were no injuries but a home suffered “substantial damage” after a fire Thursday afternoon in Portland.

The Portland Area Fire Authority responded to a two-story, residential structure fire the afternoon of May 7, according to the Ionia Department of Public Safety, which assisted at the scene. The fire occurred at 445 Academy St. in Portland, said Portland Area Fire Authority Chief Tim Krizov. The chief said his department was dispatched at 3:03 p.m.

There were no injuries and the home suffered “substantial damage,” according to Ionia DPS.

Krizov described the home as a “total loss.” He said the fire possibly started in the rear of the residence in the burn barrel. He was advised that someone was burning cardboard in the barrel earlier in the day and believes the wind helped cause the house fire.

Portland Fire requested an aerial truck to assist with ventilation and an elevated platform for fire suppression, according to Ionia DPS.

Ionia DPS’ Truck 53 arrived at the scene. The Lyons-Muir Fire Department provided a 5-inch water supply line while operations were started, according to Ionia DPS. Two ventilation holes were opened on the second story roof, and the master stream from the platform helped to extinguish the fire on the second floor. Truck 53 pumped 27,200 gallons of water on the fire, according to Ionia DPS.

The Berlin-Orange and Pewamo fire departments also assisted at the scene.

Crews cleared the scene around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Krizov said.

According to a post on the “Portland Michigan Community Page!” on Facebook, the home was owned by John Fryover — a longtime member of VFW Post 4090.

“While we are glad that everyone was able to get out safely, there was significant damage to the home,” the VFW Post stated. “Several people have offered to generously donate to help offset some of the cost from this fire, but were unsure of how to do so. With this in mind, the VFW would like to coordinate the donation effort for John. We will ensure all donated funds are give directly to him... no third-party company and no percentage loss.”
