Hygiene items will be given away from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Church of God, 2121 S. Custer Rd., as part of the Extra Blessings ministry.

Recipients must show proof of Monroe County residency.

Families and individuals will receive toilet paper, bath soaps (body wash and bar soap), shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving cream and razors, laundry soap and dish soap.

First Church of God and its partners began the Extra Blessings ministry a decade ago. It began in May, 2010, to “fulfill Jesus’ command to serve our community,” said Pastor Kevin Spencer.

Distributions take place the second Saturday of each month.

“As of this April 11, we have distributed more than 235,821 single items have served over 20,000 families in Monroe County,” said Spencer.

Saturday is the ministry’s 120th distribution.

“We would like to point out that this has been a collaborative of churches and people in our community that have come together to support this ministry,” said Spencer. “Without the physical and financial support from Liberty Missionary Baptist, Calvary United Methodist, First Baptist, Hope Church, private donors and all of the volunteers, there is no way our little country church would be able to continue serving the community of Monroe. During this time of crisis with the spread of COVID-19, we have continued to serve the citizens of Monroe County.”

“We are always in need of volunteers, hygiene items and financial support,” he said.

Donations can be dropped-off or mailed to First Church of God, C/O Extra Blessings Ministry, 2121 S. Custer Rd., Monroe 48161. Cash should not be mailed.

“If your business or organization would like to help us, it would be much appreciated,” he said. “The family here at First Church of God wants to thank everyone for making the Extra Blessings Ministry a success, and we are looking forward to celebrating the next 10 years with you.”
