TUSCARORA TOWNSHIP — Officers with the Tuscarora Township Police Department were kept busy over the first weekend of May with many calls, including helping in the rescue of three boaters who had capsized.
On April 30, around 7:23 p.m., officers with the police department were dispatched to a capsized boat in the area of Sturgeon Bay Road, off Eagles Nest Road, along with Cheboygan Life Support System ambulance, the Topinabee Fire Department, Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department Dive Team and other available law enforcement. It was reported there were three people in the water, who were hanging onto the boat, about a mile off shore on Burt Lake.
"Upon arrival, officers could see the boat and with the help of a citizen with a boat, the officer and the citizen went out and pulled a 13-year-old male, a 35-year-old male and a 48-year-old male from the water," said Tuscarora Township Police Chief Gordon Temple.
Everyone who was pulled from the water was treated for hypothermia by ambulance personnel at the scene, and then released.
The Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources were able to secure the boat and remove it from the water on May 1.
On May 1, around 2:56 a.m., officers with the department were dispatched to a residence on South Straits Highway for a domestic disturbance call.
When the officers arrived at the home, they spoke with a woman at the home who said she and her boyfriend had been arguing earlier in the evening. They had started arguing again and her boyfriend had punched her in the arms and legs, leaving bruises.
"The 33-year-old Indian River man was placed under arrest for domestic violence and lodged at the Cheboygan County Jail," said Temple.
Later that day, officers with the township police department were dispatched to the area of southbound I-75, near the 306 mile marker, around 5:05 p.m. There had been reports of an elderly man in his vehicle on the side of the road and the officers were being asked to check on his well being.
When they arrived on scene, the officers spoke with the man, a 72-year-old man from Dexter.
"The man was highly intoxicated and failed his field sobriety tests," said Temple. "He registered a 0.19 on the preliminary breath test."
The man was placed under arrest for operating while intoxicated, first offense. He was transported to the Cheboygan County Jail, where he was lodged.
On May 2, around 8:05 a.m., an Otsego County Deputy requested assistance from the Tuscarora Township Police Department in locating a 20-year-old Indian River man. The Indian River man was the suspect in a felonious assault case in Vanderbilt, where a gun and a crowbar was used in the assault.
At 5:40 p.m., officers with the department, with help from the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department, were able to locate the man hiding in a dugout at Cooperation Park.
"The man was taken into custody and turned over to the Otsego County Sheriff's Department," said Temple.
The names of these individuals are not being released at this time, as they have not been formally arraigned for their crimes.
