SAULT STE. MARIE — Hearthside Assisted Living and The Merlin Home is celebrating Mother’s Day a little bit different this year.

While the coronavirus is still a threat to the world, that doesn’t stop people from celebrating Mother’s Day, which is coming up on Sunday, May 10. These organizations are holding a drive-by wave parade for their residents at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 9.

“We will have our residents either outside, practicing the social distancing of course, or near the windows that you will be driving by,” said Wendy Pearce, activities director at Hearthside. “We would love to have you decorate your cars, make signs with words of encouragement, and honk as you go by. Please do not stop during the drive by. You are welcome to come back around for a second or third pass if you wish.”

For those interested, the line-up will meet in the parking lot between Detroit Dye and Bunker Manufacturing. From the parking lot, cars will turn left onto 12th then right on 6th Avenue. The cars will then drive in front of Hearthside Assisted Living, then turn left on Hyde to pass The Merlin Home and follow the road around the block and out on 12th again.

“We are excited to be celebrating Mother's Day. Even though it is a bit non traditional, we thought this was a fun and safe way for relatives, friends, and community members to celebrate with those that they cannot directly be with. Also it is a way we can show support for your health care staff as well as a way for the community to come together safely,” Pierce added.
