Sunday of homecoming weekend eyed as new 2020 commencement date

ADRIAN — If all goes according to plan, Adrian College graduates will have their ceremony on homecoming weekend.

The college announced Friday that Sunday, Oct. 4, has been slated as the commencement date for the Class of 2020. Graduates were supposed to be honored today. The original May 3 graduation was postponed last month when social distancing measures were extended through April 30.

The decision to hold commencement homecoming weekend was made after discussions among senior staff members who decided the ceremony would be best held during one of the most anticipated weekends of the year on campus.

A survey of graduates indicated strong support, 67%, for a Sunday commencement.

“I am very happy we checked with the students before making a decision,” said AC President Jeffrey Docking in a news release. “We want our students and their families to be able to celebrate this special day as soon as possible, and when it is most convenient for them.”

Commencement day events are intended to be similar to the traditional spring festivities, such as photos of students receiving their certificates and class photo, but adjustments will be made according to state guidelines in place at that time.

Docking will serve as the commencement speaker.

The ceremony will be outside at Commencement Plaza unless there is inclement weather. The Merillat Sport and Fitness Center will serve as an alternate location, if need be.
