CHEBOYGAN COUNTY — Due to the uncertain nature of COVID-19, the Inland Lakes Educational Foundation has regretfully canceled both upcoming Inland Lakes Educational Foundation events.
There were two events that needed to be canceled due to the virus concerns, the annual dinner on May 21 at the Indian River Golf Club and the annual Scholarship Golf Tournament on June 28.
“We’re deeply disappointed we cannot host these milestone events people look forward to each year,” said Inland Lakes Educational Foundation President Jennifer Andrew. “But during these unprecedented times our focus is the health and financial consideration of a generous community who’s faithfully supported us for decades.”
Despite the annual dinner and golf tournament cancellations, scholarships for graduating seniors and continuing education students will be awarded as scheduled. The scholarship application deadline for graduating seniors was Friday, April 24. Continuing education students have until Friday, May 29 to submit applications.
There will be six scholarships awarded to graduating seniors this year, in the amount of $5,900 each. There will also be 28 continuing education scholarships given out to those who are continuing to further their education, in the amount of $2,950 each. This brings the total amount to be given out this year to $118,000.
The Inland Lakes Educational Foundation (ILEF) is organized to seek contributions and to provide a source of funding for educational programs, activities and events for the enrichment and benefit of Inland Lakes students. The Foundation funding does not replace tax supported programs, but enhances educational opportunities for area young people and a scholarship program has been the major focus of the foundation to date.
Since the foundation was first started in 1986, there has been $1,184,025 handed out in scholarships, divided up among 745 scholarships.
The funds awarded by the Inland Lakes Educational Foundation are meant to be used for both vocational and academic studies to those who are graduating from the school. Those who have received the awards from the foundation have gone on to pursue careers in nursing, engineering and everywhere in between. There have also been others who have gotten vocational careers as well.
