With the first day of school just around the corner, Cheboygan Compassionate Ministry will host its 10th annual backpack giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 12 - 2 p.m. at the Wesleyan Community Church in Cheboygan. Students will receive backpacks filled with school supplies for the age appropriate class. High school, middle school and elementary students can receive pens, pencils, folders or glue, based on their grade. Students can also receive a free haircut, and lunch will be served. The event will also feature games for kids, dancing and other fun filled activities along with speakers to entertain guests. Local Cheboygan churches join forces with Compassionate Ministries each year to host the event for the community, and gave away 500 backpacks and over 300 lunches last year. "We do this so that every student, either elementary or high school, enters on their first day of school with the same opportunity for success as every one else," said Bill Schryer, chairperson for Compassionate Ministries.
